Characteristics and uses of common refrigerants

What is Refrigerant?

Refrigerant is a cooling medium that absorbs heat and leaves cool air when passing through a compressor and evaporator. It alternates between a liquid and gas state during the thermodynamic process.

How Does Refri gerant Function?
1. When the refrigerant is in the evaporator, it absorbs heat from the surrounding environment and changes from liquid to gas. In this process, the temperature of the surrounding environment decreases, thereby achieving a cooling effect.
2. Subsequently, the gaseous refrigerant is compressed by the compressor, and the pressure and temperature increase.
3. Then, the high-temperature and high-pressure gaseous refrigerant in the condenser changes from gas back to liquid by dissipating heat to the outside world.
4. The liquid refrigerant is then depressurized by the throttle valve and returns to the evaporator to start a new cycle. The above process is repeated continuously, thereby continuously achieving cooling.Characteristics and uses of common refrigerants 1

Types of Refrigerant

R134a

Physical and chemical properties: R134a is a colorless gas with a slight ether smell at room temperature and pressure; R134a has a molecular weight of 102.03, a boiling point of -26.1°C, a critical temperature of 101.1°C, a critical pressure of 4.05Mpa, a liquid specific heat (30°C) of 1.51 [KJ/(kg•°C)], ODP=0, GWP=1200, and an ASHRAE safety level of A1 (non-toxic and non-flammable); R134a is generally compressed into a liquid and stored in a cylinder, and its thermal performance is similar to that of R12.

Main uses: R134a is mainly used in most areas where R-12 refrigerant is used, including refrigerators, freezers, water dispensers, car air conditioners, central air conditioners, dehumidifiers, cold storage, commercial refrigeration, ice cream machines, ice cream makers, refrigeration condensing units and other refrigeration equipment. It can also be used in aerosol propellants, medical aerosols, insecticide propellants, polymer (plastic) physical foaming agents, and magnesium alloy protective gases, etc. It can also be used to configure other mixed refrigerants, such as R404A and R407C.

R12

Physical and chemical properties: R12 is a colorless, odorless, non-corrosive gas at room temperature, and can be liquefied into a colorless, transparent liquid under pressure. R12 is non-toxic, non-flammable, and has good thermal and chemical stability; R12 has an expansion effect on ordinary plastics and natural rubber.

Main uses: R12 can be used as a refrigerant, fire extinguisher, insecticide, spray, etc. As a refrigerant, it is widely used in refrigerators, freezers, central air-conditioning chillers and other refrigeration and air-conditioning fields.

R22

Physical and chemical properties: R22 has a molecular weight of 86.5. It is a colorless, nearly odorless gas at room temperature. It is non-flammable, non-corrosive, and extremely slightly toxic. It can be liquefied into a colorless, transparent liquid under pressure. It is a HCFC refrigerant. R-22 has high chemical and thermal stability, especially in the absence of water; it does not react with general metals below 200°C. In the presence of water, it only reacts slowly with alkali, but it will crack at high temperatures.

Main uses: R22 is mainly used in household air conditioners, commercial air conditioners, central air conditioners, mobile air conditioners, heat pump water heaters, dehumidifiers, refrigerated dryers, cold storage, food freezing equipment, marine refrigeration equipment, industrial refrigeration, commercial refrigeration, refrigeration condensing units, supermarket display cabinets and other refrigeration equipment. Dichloromonofluoromethane can also be used as a raw material for the production of polytetrafluoroethylene resin and an intermediate for fire extinguishing agent 1121, as well as a physical foaming agent for polymers (plastics).

R290

Physical and chemical properties: Propane (R290), molecular weight 44.9, boiling point -42.2℃, critical temperature 96.67℃, critical pressure 4.24MPa, vapor pressure (25℃) 0.475MPa, ozone depletion potential (ODP) 0, global warming coefficient (GWP) 0.01.
Main uses: High-purity R290 is used as a temperature-sensing working fluid; premium and first-grade R290 can be used as a refrigerant to replace R22 and R502, and is compatible with the original system and lubricating oil.
R404A
Physical and chemical properties: R404A molecular weight is 97.6, boiling point is -46.5℃, critical temperature is 72.1℃, critical pressure is 3.74Mpa, liquid specific heat (30℃) is 0.38 [KJ/(kg·°C)], ODP=0, GWP=3800; R404A is a chlorine-free non-azeotropic mixed refrigerant, a colorless gas at room temperature and pressure, and a compressed liquefied gas stored in a cylinder.
Main uses: R404A is mainly used to replace R22 and R502. It has the characteristics of cleanliness, low toxicity, non-flammability, and good refrigeration effect. It is often used in cold storage, food freezing equipment, marine refrigeration equipment, industrial low-temperature refrigeration, commercial low-temperature refrigeration, transportation refrigeration equipment (refrigerated trucks, etc.), refrigeration condensing units, supermarket display cabinets and other refrigeration equipment.
